European Commission Launches Investigation Into xAI’s Grok Over Deepfake Concerns
The European Commission has initiated formal proceedings against xAI's Grok chatbot following reports of widespread deepfake generation. Research from the Centre for Countering Digital Hate revealed the AI system produced approximately three million non-consensual images of women and children within days.
Irish MEP Regina Doherty confirmed the regulatory action, stating: "When credible reports emerge of AI systems harming vulnerable groups, EU law must be enforced without delay." The case raises significant questions about platform accountability under the Digital Services Act, particularly regarding risk assessment and content moderation obligations.
This investigation marks the first major test of EU regulatory frameworks against generative AI systems. Doherty emphasized the precedent-setting nature of the case, noting it underscores the need for ongoing adaptation of the AI Act to address emerging technologies.
